BAD BATTERY CONNECTION
If your boat’s engine is powered by a battery bank, you might face issues if the connections get shaken loose. This can happen from vibrations created by the boat when it’s out and about on the water.
One other possible battery related issue is corrosion. Make sure that you get your boat serviced periodically to make sure that there isn’t any buildup of corrosion that might affect the connection between your battery and engine.
KINKED FUEL LINES
Another issue that might be preventing your boat engine from working properly is fuel line damage. Check the line running from the engine to the tank and make sure that it isn’t damaged or kinked. A crimped or kinked fuel line won’t be able to supply fuel to the engine, so it won’t start. It’s simple enough to fix kinks or replace the line if necessary.
OVERHEATING ENGINE
Just like motor vehicles, a boat engine needs to be kept cool with the help of a water pump. Many different factors can cause your engine to overheat—you might need a new water pump, or you might be running low on coolant or oil. It’s important to check the levels of coolant and oil regularly to ensure that the system is maintained properly.
Exhaust blockage can also cause your engine to overheat. If it isn’t addressed, the manifold might corrode over time, causing complete engine failure. A professional marine mechanic is trained to look out for any faults or corrosion.
PROPELLER DAMAGE
Your boat’s propeller has the potential to strike rocks or get tangled in weeds or fishing lines. While propeller issues aren’t usually associated with the engine, a problem with the propeller can cause excessive vibrations to your engine, and in turn, cause damage to it. If your propeller is damaged or loose, it’s best to take it to get fixed immediately.
